Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are becoming established for transporting materials and equipment in manufacturing environments, without the need for an operator, but with more flexibility than path-following Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Typically, AMRs are used for carrying or towing smaller loads, but there is an opportunity to transport large industrial robots within a facility to maximise versatility and productivity. Integration of such equipment with the Manufacturing Execution Systems and safety systems is particularly challenging. As part of the MSIRCCF, the Omnifactory Research Centre is upgrading an existing manually controlled mobile platform with autonomous capabilities, integrating it with the Siemens Digital Enterprise portfolio to connect the virtual and real world, and maximise efficiency and flexibility.
